Alliance BJJ Houston is proud to host a free intro to Women’s Jiu-Jitsu and self-defense on Saturday, July 11th from 10:00–11:30 AM. The free class will be taught by Jiu-Jitsu brown belt Kailee Crossey. The seminar is designed to introduce more women to the sport of Jiu-Jitsu and to teach the skills she feels are important and necessary for every individual to defend themselves if needed. It will be a monthly event, creating ongoing opportunities for women across Pearland and greater Houston to learn, grow, and train together.

“I believe Jiu Jitsu has a place for every single person no matter their goals or journey.”

Who Should Attend?

This seminar is open to women and girls of all ages and experience levels. Whether you’re interested in learning self-defense, improving your fitness, gaining confidence, or simply trying something new, this class is for you.

The event is completely free to remove any barriers to getting started, and there’s no pressure to commit to ongoing training. Both Alliance members and non-members are encouraged to attend. Kailee hopes participants leave feeling more confident and empowered — whether they continue training or simply take away a few valuable self-defense skills.

“If you learn one thing that can save you in a self defense situation but never walk back into the gym, that’s still a win! I want to support women in feeling confident and empowered, and what better way to do that than training Martial Arts.”

Why Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Is Effective for Self-Defense

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is one of the most practical martial arts for self-defense because it emphasizes technique, leverage, and timing rather than strength or athletic ability — which makes it a perfect fit for women interested in protecting themselves.

Unlike many striking martial arts that rely heavily on speed and power, Jiu-Jitsu allows people of all ages, sizes, and fitness levels to learn effective ways to protect themselves. As students develop techniques that work for their body type, they gain practical skills that can help them defend against larger or stronger opponents.

Another unique advantage of BJJ is its adaptability. Since you never know who you may face in a real-life situation, learning techniques that work against different body types and levels of strength provides valuable confidence and preparedness.

Meet Your Instructor: Kailee Crossey

Kailee Crossey began her martial arts journey in 2013, first training in Muay Thai before transitioning to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, where she discovered a lifelong passion for the sport.

She has been coaching Jiu-Jitsu for the past four years and previously spent 10 years coaching equestrian sports. Her love of teaching and helping others inspired her to offer monthly women’s self-defense seminars that are welcoming, educational, and empowering.

What to Expect

This seminar is designed with beginners in mind, so no previous martial arts experience is necessary. Participants will learn fundamental self-defense concepts and basic Jiu-Jitsu techniques that can help escape common dangerous situations. If more experienced students attend, Kailee may also demonstrate additional advanced techniques.

To make the most of the experience:

  • Wear comfortable athletic clothing that allows you to move freely (avoid denim or restrictive clothing).
  • Bring shoes that are easy to remove, as shoes are not permitted on the training mats.
  • Keep shoes on throughout the rest of the gym, especially in the restrooms.
  • Bring a water bottle, though a water fountain is available for guests.
  • Arrive a few minutes early to complete a waiver at the front desk before class begins.

Bring a Friend — The Hardest Part Is Walking Through the Door

This seminar is more than just a self-defense class — it’s an opportunity to meet other women, learn something new, and challenge yourself in a supportive environment. If you can, bring a friend and enjoy the experience together. Starting something new can feel intimidating, but every black belt started as a beginner — a black belt is simply a white belt that never quit. The hardest part is often walking through the door.

Explore the full class schedule to keep training after the seminar, or get in touch with the front desk with any questions. Alliance BJJ Houston is located just off Sam Houston Parkway, an easy drive from Pearland, Friendswood, and League City. The Alliance team looks forward to seeing you on the mats!

“It took me out of my comfort zone learning something new, but it was the best thing I’ve ever done.”
