Empowering Women Through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: A Free Monthly Seminar in Pearland

At Alliance BJJ Houston, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is meant to be accessible to everyone. That idea is what put the academy’s free Women’s BJJ Fundamentals Seminar on the calendar — an open session in Pearland that welcomed members and non-members alike onto the mats for a morning of learning, movement, and community.

The seminar was led by Kailee Crossey, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brown belt and one of the academy’s female instructors. Her aim was to give women across Pearland and south Houston a supportive introduction to women’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu — especially anyone curious about martial arts but hesitant to walk into a traditional co-ed class. Kailee guided participants through the foundational movements every beginner should know: how to break fall safely, how to shrimp, which is one of the most essential movements in Jiu-Jitsu, and practical escapes from common positions that carry directly into real self-defense situations.

Blue Belts Stepped Up to Partner With Beginners

One of the highlights of the seminar was the support from Alliance’s experienced female students. Several blue belts volunteered to partner with first-timers, creating a welcoming environment where women brand new to grappling could learn at their own pace, ask questions, and build confidence. Their encouragement is a large part of what made the session comfortable and genuinely fun for everyone on the mat.

Why the Fundamentals Are Worth Revisiting

The seminar wasn’t only valuable for newcomers. Experienced members got just as much out of returning to the basics. In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the fundamentals are the foundation of every technique — and of every self-defense application built on top of them. Taking the time to refine those movements is something practitioners at every level can appreciate, whether it’s a first day on the mats or a tenth year of grappling.

A Room Full of People Learning Together

The energy throughout the class reinforced what makes the Alliance community in Pearland what it is. Whether someone arrived with years of grappling experience or was stepping onto the mats for the very first time, everyone trained with patience, respect, and a shared desire to learn. That culture isn’t reserved for special events — it shows up in every martial arts class on the weekly schedule, and it’s something the coaching team works hard to protect.

The Women’s Fundamentals Seminar Is Now Monthly

Because the first session went so well, the Women’s Fundamentals Seminar is now a monthly event at the Pearland academy. The next one is set for Saturday, August 29, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and like the first, it is completely free to attend.

These seminars are built specifically for women who have wanted to try Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu but felt intimidated by starting in a co-ed environment. It’s a relaxed, beginner-friendly way to experience the art, pick up real self-defense skills, and meet other women training martial arts in Pearland. No experience is necessary, and there is no expectation to sign up for anything afterward. Details on what to wear and what to bring are covered in the seminar’s what-to-expect guide.
