Thomas Dougherty Earns His Black Belt After 16 Years on the Mat

Some milestones take years to reach. For Thomas Dougherty, earning his black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu took over 16 years of dedicated training — and the Alliance BJJ Houston family was there to celebrate every second of it.

The evening kicked off with a special guard passing seminar led by Professor Ed Ramos of Inspire BJJ. Ed isn’t just any visiting instructor — he’s Thomas’s “BJJ dad,” having guided him through every belt from white to brown over more than a decade of shared mat time. Watching Ed break down technique with the same precision and care he’s shown Thomas for years set the perfect tone for the night.

The Promotion Ceremony

After the seminar wrapped, we moved into the main event. The room was packed — teammates, friends, family, and training partners from across the Houston area all showed up to support Thomas. The turnout was incredible and a testament to the kind of person Thomas is both on and off the mat.

Professor Ed Ramos had the honor of tying the black belt around Thomas’s waist. Sixteen years of early mornings, tough rounds, injuries, comebacks, and relentless consistency — all of it led to this moment. It was a reminder that there are no shortcuts in jiu-jitsu. The black belt finds you when you refuse to quit.

A Community Celebration

We want to thank every single person who came out to support Thomas. The group photo alone tells the story — this community is special. From white belts to black belts, kids program parents to competition teammates, the Alliance Houston family showed up in full force.

Rolling in the New Black Belt

After the ceremony, we wrapped things up the only way a BJJ gym knows how — with light snacks, desserts, drinks, and of course open mat. There’s an unwritten rule that a fresh black belt has to get some rolls in on promotion night, and Thomas was more than happy to oblige. The mats stayed busy well into the evening as everyone took turns breaking in that brand new belt.
